Ludo - Rules of the Game

Ludo is a popular board game with origins in the ancient Indian game Pachisi. It’s a fun and competitive game played by 2-4 players. In West Africa, Ludo is particularly beloved, often found at family gatherings, social events, and local chop bars, bringing people together for hours of fun and rivalry.

How to Play Ludo:

Setup:

Each player has 4 pawns that start in their coloured “home” area. The goal is to move all your pawns around the board and into the centre "home" column before your opponents.

Objective:

Be the first player to get all four of your pawns from your starting home area to the centre "home" area.

Gameplay:

  • Players take turns rolling a single dice.
  • You need to roll a 6 to move a pawn out of your home area and onto the starting square. Once you roll a 6, you can move a pawn onto the board and roll again.
  • Move your pawn according to the number rolled on the dice.
  • If you land on a square occupied by another player’s pawn, you capture that pawn, sending it back to their home area unless they are in their safe zone. They must roll another 6 to get back on the board when it’s their turn.
  • Rolling a 6 gives you an extra turn.

Safe Zones:

Your starting areas and the centre "home" column are "safe zones" where your pawns cannot be captured.

End of the Game:

Once you’ve moved all your pawns around the board, you need to get each pawn into the centre "home" column by rolling the exact number required to reach it. (If you don’t roll the exact number, you miss a go and must wait for your next turn to try again.)

Tip:

Capture your opponents by landing on their pawns whenever possible, but keep your pawns moving to avoid being sent back to your home area!
